Transforming health research in Europe
Health remained high on the agenda for The Guild, as we focused particularly on the future of EU health research funding, in the context of Horizon Europe’s Strategic Plan 2025–2027 and the upcoming Framework Programme for Research and Innovation (FP10).
Health research in the context of European competitiveness
In our statement on the importance of health research in the context of European competitiveness, The Guild highlights how health research is critical to the European Union’s global competitiveness and citizens’ well-being. The Guild thus strongly supports initiatives like the Life Sciences Strategy, the EU Biotech Act, the Pharmaceutical Reform, and the European Health Data Space, which have significant potential to enhance research and access to advanced treatments. However, challenges such as fragmented health systems, skills shortages, and external dependencies must be addressed through concerted action and robust investment in research and skills, particularly through the MFF and FP10. The Guild advocates for universities to play a key role in EU health policy, emphasising the importance of early-stage research and academia–industry collaboration. Interdisciplinary research, including AI and insights from the Social Sciences, Arts, and Humanities, are essential for advancing health research and addressing complex health challenges.
Additionally, The Guild calls for increased funding for health research, addressing the EU’s funding deficit, particularly in comparison to global competitors. By fostering collaboration between academia and industry and supporting startups and SMEs, the EU can drive innovation and contribute to economic growth. Public–private partnerships are crucial for advancing research and translating it into practical solutions for societal challenges, ensuring Europe remains competitive in global health research.
