The scientific networks call for better recognition of the proactive but often discreet role of scientific networks of universities and academics for science diplomacy: underpinning trust, carrying out vital science diplomacy and contributing to global decision-making.
The communiqué below is based on reflections from our jointly organised side event to the 2nd European Science Diplomacy Conference held in Copenhagen in December 2025, conclusions from the overall Science Diplomacy Conference in the context of the upcoming Council Recommendation on Science Diplomacy which is part of the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the European Union.
Science diplomacy is increasingly seen as the ‘other side of the coin’ for research security. Our discussions at the conference showed how working as networks is a powerful way for academic collaborations to counterweigh cross-border challenges. The Guild harnesses its strength as a network, to integrate principles of responsible internationalisation with our multilateral CoRE initiative for equitable partnerships. Building Europe's understanding and support for science diplomacy can strengthen all stakeholders’ efforts to address shared global challenges amid geopolitical rupture.
