To ensure AI strengthens society rather than deepens its challenges, we must critically examine how it is developed and deployed. In two opinion pieces professor Morten Dæhlen, Co-director of The Norwegian Centre of Trustworthy AI (TRUST) at the University of Oslo, contributes to the ongoing debate.
In one piece, Dæhlen further develops ideas he originally considered in The Guild’s Insight Paper on the Twin Transition “The Twin Transition Century”, exploring how the digital transition must support, rather than undermine the green transition. AI is not an abstract or immaterial force, it consumes electricity, minerals, water, land and more. He argues for a planet-centric approach that puts the environmental sustainability of AI at its core.
When Machines Think, the Planet Shouldn't Pay
In the other piece, Dæhlen turns to the broader question of sustainability and economic growth. We must acknowledge the link between economic expansion and the overuse of planetary resources. Can AI support in creating a greener economy? Can it support prosperity without accelerating environmental degradation?
