Back to Fundamentals of Research: Ethics and Academic Freedom

On 2 December 2024, Secretary-General of The Guild Jan Palmowski will participate in a roundtable discussion in the third and final event of the series “Back to Fundamental of Research”. The event will take place online and in-person, in Aula Giorgio Prodi, Piazza S. Giovanni in Monte 2, 40124 Bologna BO and aims to address new ethical concerns and potential risks for research freedom.

The event will focus on the impact of new technologies, such as generative artificial intelligence, and rapid geopolitical changes on the research ecosystem. It aims to explore measures to protect, facilitate, strengthen, and optimise academic freedom, which is considered a fundamental right and the main route to excellence in science.

Key topics to be discussed include:

  • - The influence of new technologies and geopolitical changes on research.
  • - Strategies to safeguard and enhance academic freedom.
  • - Balancing diverse interests to build a responsible research ecosystem.

Academic freedom fosters independent and critical thinking, which is essential for a responsible research ecosystem. The event will highlight the importance of protecting and strengthening academic freedom while ensuring a balance between different needs.

Secretary-General Jan Palmowski will participate in the first roundtable discussion at 4pm CET providing an institutional perspective. The session will be moderated by Alberto Credi, Professor of General and Inorganic Chemistry, University of Bologna. Other panellists include:

> Fulvio Esposito, Representative of the Italian Ministry of Research in G7 working group on “Security and Integrity of The Global Research Ecosystem”

> Maura Hiney, Adjunct Professor of Research Integrity at UCD Institute for Discovery and Chair of the All European Academies (ALLEA) Permanent Working Group on Science and Ethics

> Slaven Misljencevic - Policy officer, European Commission, DG RTD A2 ERA, Spreading Excellence and Research Careers

> Alessandra Celletti - Italian Agency for the Evaluation of Universities and Research Institutes (ANVUR)

This event closes the series of half-day seminars dedicated to the fundamentals of research organised by the University of Bologna. It will bring together institutional stakeholders and researchers to discuss opportunities, challenges, and best practices in maintaining a responsible research ecosystem based on academic freedom and institutional autonomy.
