Toomas Asser

Toomas Asser is Rector of the University of Tartu, Professor of Neurosurgery and Member of the Estonian Academy of Sciences.

Toomas Asser studied Medicine in Tartu State University and completed his PhD in medicine in Moscow N. Burdenko Institute of Neurosurgery. In 1979 he began his career in Tartu State University starting from the assistant’s and associate professor’s positions in Neurosurgery and Neurology Clinic. In 1988 he stayed 1 year in Tohoku University in Japan as a research fellow. In 1995 he was elected a professor of neurosurgery at the University of Tartu. Before the current position as a Rector (2018–) he was a Head of Department of Neurology and Neurosurgery (1996–2018) and Dean of the Faculty of Medicine  (2000–2009).

T. Asser has been elected member of the Estonian Academy of Sciences (2011). He is a member of the National Research & Development Council (2018 −); member of Training Committee (2003–2018) and Vice President (2011–2015) of European Association of Neurosurgical Societies ; member (1990–) and President (2006–2009, 2014–2018) of Baltic Neurosurgical Association; member of Estonian Society of Neurologists and Neurosurgeons (1989 −) and member of the Estonian Movement Disorders Society.

Main fields of research: Cerebrovascular diseases, surgical treatment of cerebral artery aneurysms. Functional surgery, deep brain stimulation. Pathomorphology and epidemiology of brain tumors, development of new approach for the treatment of malignant gliomas. Functional magnetic resonance Imaging.
