On 1 June 2017, the rector of the University of Tübingen, Bernd Engler, hosted a discussion with 90 representatives of member universities of the Guild, and Jean-Pierre Bourguignon, president of the European Research Council (ERC). Bourguignon urged university communities to be vigilant in defending frontier-led science, encouraging rectors and academic leaders to keep articulating the importance of excellent research to citizens, MEPs, national politicians and the media.
The University of Bern has been admitted to The Guild of European Research-Intensive Universities as its newest member with immediate effect.
On 27 April, the Swedish government appointed Guild Chair and rector of the University of Oslo (UiO) Ole Petter Ottersen, as Vice-Chancellor of Karolinska Institute (KI) in Stockholm.
The Guild and other academic associations give a unified voice to Europe's research community
On 22 April 2017, The Guild will join people across the world to celebrate the collaborative and transnational spirit of science, and to condemn efforts to curtail academic freedom.
Universities must step up to the unique challenge of leading the debate on the future of Europe, ensuring freedom of expression, quality of argument, and critical dialogue; practices that are currently being threatened on other continents.
