Today, 1 June 2020, the Babeș-Bolyai University (UBB) officially becomes The Guild’s twentieth member. To mark the occasion, The Guild interviewed Rector Daniel David to learn more about his vision on the past, present, and future of the Romanian leading research university.

The Guild urges the Commission, the European Council and the European Parliament to increase their commitment to research, education and innovation in the Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF), and ensure a timely start for 2021. The Guild also underlines that the aspiration of the NextGenerationEU recovery instrument to support research, innovation and education must be evidenced in the descriptions of the programmes that it covers.

Over the past week, it has become clear that Africa is particularly vulnerable to the spread of COVID-19, and its economic consequences. Africa’s universities have been at the forefront of fighting the virus on their continent. Members of the African Research Universities Alliance (ARUA), with which The Guild has entered a close partnership, have been engaging in research to understand the virus within the local context and to support the search for a vaccine.

The Guild has presented the European Parliament with amendments on the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT) legislative package. The package comprises the proposals for a Regulation and for a Decision on the Strategic Innovation Agenda (SIA), which defines the EIT’s priority fields and strategy for the period 2021-2027.
