These priorities reflect the need to strengthen excellence throughout the EU and ensure that academic institutions in Europe retain their position amongst the best in the world. The Excellence initiatives should pursue three complementary objectives:
- scale up existing activities to support the next generation of excellent R&I networks by creating pan-European knowledge/excellence hubs in strategic areas.
- support the institutional development of universities as they seek to become more competitive and advance in areas such as Open Science, interdisciplinarity, and articulating the societal value of science.
- address the research and innovation (R&I) divide in Europe by supporting the best institutions in Widening countries to develop strategies for building on excellence and delivering on it.
The Excellence initiatives would give new momentum to the European Research Area. They would develop potential synergies with the European Universities, and ensure that universities – as drivers of the knowledge economy through their research and education – are strengthened across Europe.
