The university has pioneered developments in material sciences such as smart textiles, high performing composites, and cutting-edge concrete, but also scientific discoveries in plant biotechnology (e.g. pioneering researchers as Van Montagu, Fiers, and Schell) and in medicine (e.g. first lung transplant, world-class research in immunology and cell death). Ghent University furthermore provides policy advice based on excellent scholarship in areas such as ECTS, human rights, trans-Atlantic trade, EU institutional reform and immigration issues.
